Chapter 168. Schneider’s Story
Side Story 5. Schneider’s Story
The Black Kitten’s first conscious memory was of opening its eyes beneath a tree stump in the Wild Mountain. It wasn’t necessarily where it was born, but for the kitten, that tree stump was the first place it held a distinct memory of.
“…Meow.”
The small, fragile Black Kitten possessed a clear consciousness. It could discern its surroundings and displayed a surprisingly high level of intelligence.
The Mother Cat who had been looking after this kitten had gone out to hunt, only to be killed by a Zombie. It was an unfortunate encounter, a battle that was utterly unwinnable. And so, the Black Kitten was left utterly alone in the world, without any siblings.
“Kyaaang.”
The hungry Black Kitten’s first prey was a small Bug it stumbled upon by chance. Though it had no Mother Cat to teach it the art of hunting, its instincts proved formidable. The tiny Bug easily crumbled beneath the Black Kitten’s adorable, clumsy kicks.
Just as the Black Kitten swelled with pride from its first successful hunt, a crisis loomed. Wild Dog Packs had begun to roam, killing and driving away stray cats.
Woof woof sniff sniff sniff
“…”
A single Wild Dog, having picked up the Black Kitten’s scent, began its relentless pursuit. The massive Wild Dog relentlessly tracked the Black Kitten’s movements, steadily closing in. The poor Black Kitten simply concealed itself, praying with all its might. It wished that colossal Monster would never, ever find it.
