Chapter 158. Purpose
“But the people at Kangwon National University… weren’t they decent?”
“They were. How many groups like that do you think exist now?”
“Then why did you refuse their offer?”
We were on our way home from Kangwon National University.
I had politely declined Professor Choi’s offer. Using the excuse of our current shelter and the people still there, I told him we couldn’t join them immediately. I also left open the possibility of visiting again later.
“From my perspective, those people were lucky.”
“You’re right. It seemed like good people had gathered there.”
“No, that’s not what I mean… What do you think would have happened if the Ark had been in Chuncheon City, Gangwon-do at the same time?”
“Uh… they probably would’ve been crushed, right? And the women, at best, would’ve faced enslavement.”
“Exactly.”
I felt it once again. I needed more strength. Professor Choi’s words were plausible, but he had ultimately offered me to join because he felt the need for military power. He described an ideal reality and plan, but glossed over the uncomfortable truth. Crucially, I still didn’t have enough power to protect such a group. If I had thought I could handle it, I might have considered joining them more positively. Judging myself, I wasn’t at that level yet. Moving alone or in a small group reduced the chances of being targeted, and made it easier to escape if things went south. That’s not to say his words were entirely wrong, though.
“Think about places like India or China. It’s truly horrifying.”
