Chapter 68. Schneider
In the darkness, a pair of amber eyes stared back at us.
The sun hadn’t fully set yet, but the creature’s black fur blended into the shadows, making its eyes shine even more vividly.
“Schneider?”
I muttered, almost without realizing it.
What we’d encountered was a kitten with entirely black fur. The tiny creature, about 20cm long, had slipped under the furniture we’d piled up for the evening and was sitting there quietly.
“Oh my god! It’s so cute!”
“Where’s your mom? Are you all alone?”
The women erupted in excitement. They didn’t dare approach, but they stomped their feet in delight, cooing words the kitten couldn’t possibly understand.
“It’s not even running away. Let’s go.”
This unexpected encounter had momentarily halted our progress. If we stayed, it felt like we’d spend an eternity just watching the cat, so I took the first step.
“Its mother must be around, right?”
“She might have been nearby already. If we leave, maybe she’ll come back for it?”
I heard their hushed conversation behind me.
Schneider, huh…
Actually, I now understood what Seonyoung meant by Schrödinger’s Cat. I knew Schrödinger was a scientist, not a soccer player, and that the term came from his thought experiment. When I’d looked it up before, I hadn’t fully grasped all the details. I knew nothing about Quantum Mechanics, and I wondered what it meant for the act of opening the box to hold significance. Deterministic thinking? Non-deterministic thinking?
