Chapter 220: What Remains
I had an old dream.
And it was a lucid dream.
Swoosh.
A desolate plain near Anhui, drenched in pouring rain.
And me, walking feebly across that field.
The strange thing was that even though it was clearly me, I was watching that scene through the eyes of a third party.
Well, it’s a dream, so nothing should surprise me no matter what happens.
‘When was that?’
The thought suddenly struck me, and I rummaged through my mind to recall the memory.
‘I was on my way back after burying my family.’
The families of this world who succumbed to the plague and died helplessly.
I remember dragging each of my four family members, emaciated from starvation, one by one to bury them in the hills.
We had no means to hold proper funerals, so we had no choice.
But I couldn’t just bury them anywhere, so I found a spot in the sun and made a small mound.
I kept telling myself I’d go visit, I’d go visit, but I never made it, using busyness as an excuse.
‘I’ll go when I wake up.’
Nodding to myself as I watched over the dream, I heard a crackling sound and the scenery around me changed.
A scene teeming with people.
This was the scene at the market street in Anhui Province.
“Three fish caught from the river for one coin!”
“Come eat noodles! The broth made from chicken bones is absolutely amazing!”
“Silk from Hanzhong, three bolts for one tael of silver!”
“Please spare a coin! Oh, sir! I’m starving to death! Please, just one coin…”
