Chapter 196: North Emperor, South Empress
Baek Moo-jin paced back and forth, hands clasped behind his back, gazing at the moon. He felt a sense of unease deep inside, but he didn’t show it outwardly.
A moment later, one of his retainers approached and said.
“Master, they say you should come in.”
“Hmph.”
Baek Moo-jin suddenly looked down at his hands and sniffed them, checking if his clothes smelled. He had already washed his hands several times.
Baek Moo-jin entered.
Pulling back the curtain, he found Jin Sohye lying on the bed, looking at him with an expression so unchanged from usual that it was hard to believe she had just given birth.
As Baek Moo-jin stood stiffly, Jin So-hye whispered.
“Isn’t she beautiful?”
Had he ever walked so cautiously?
Baek Moo-jin approached the baby, his eyes wide. To see it up close, he had no choice but to kneel.
Baek Moo-jin looked at the child’s face.
It was so small.
It wasn’t yet clear who the child resembled, but the faintly visible, slightly slanted eyes were the only feature that showed it took after him.
After taking Jin Sohye’s hand, Baek Moo-jin checked her condition.
No matter what he tried to say, the right words wouldn’t come, so he just kept looking back and forth between the baby and Jin Sohye’s face.
Was this what it felt like to become a fool?
‘My child.’
Here lay a child who could do nothing without parents. Baek Moo-jin himself had been exactly like this child when he was born. Moreover, Baek Moo-jin had never seen his mother. She had passed away not long after giving birth to him.
