Chapter 74: A Maiden’s Gentle Heart
Lu Jianjia had only just opened her eyes when she “heard” and “saw” many things.
She heard the faint “crackling” of the firewood, the “rustling” of the little fox’s paws rubbing against the dust on the ground as it walked, saw the thin layer of dew on the pitch-black cave walls, and saw ants crawling in and out of the crevices in the stone.
Neither “seeing” nor “hearing” were accurate terms, because these things were presented directly within her mind.
She sat up; there was no physical discomfort, which was strange—she should have felt at least some soreness.
She looked left and right, then walked around the screen.
“Did Miss Lu have a good sleep?”
Hong Xiao waved her fingers to greet her, and Wang Xu looked up and uttered two words: “Hello.”
Lu Jianjia sat down beside Gu Shiyi, leaned in, and whispered to him, “What is going on? Why are you with them?”
“Miss Lu, why don’t you… go behind the screen to talk? You’re so close, we can hear you.”
Hong Xiao looked at Lu Jianjia with a smile that wasn’t quite a smile. The latter blinked, gave an embarrassed laugh, and said bluntly, “Didn’t you say they were coming for me?”
“Coming for you doesn’t necessarily mean killing you; they came to help you.”
Lu Jianjia blinked, looking at Gu Shiyi with half-belief.
It was Hong Xiao who generously held out her hand. “Miss Lu, we’ve come to join you. I hope you won’t mind.”
