Chapter 27: Folly and Wisdom
Lu Jianjia fell asleep.
Exhausted from crying, she leaned against Gu Shiyi and drifted off to sleep without realizing it.
Perhaps it was because his true qi was so warm, like a great stove.
Perhaps it was because the knot in her heart had finally dissolved.
By the time she opened her eyes again, dawn was just breaking. The warmth beside her brought a faint blush to her pretty face.
She had never snuggled beside a man like this before.
“Awake?”
The young man shifted, preparing to get up. Lu Jianjia felt a sudden emptiness in her heart, and driven by some unknown impulse, she said, “Don’t move. My head hurts, let me rest a moment.”
“Oh.”
As expected, the young man stayed still, letting the girl lean against him.
In the distance, the little fox lay curled in the vixen spirit’s arms, sleeping dazedly, its thick fur offering warmth and comfort.
Yet a thin layer of white snow dusted the vixen spirit’s body, unmelting.
“She died last night.”
“At least she left at peace, thanks to your promise.”
“She died with anxiety.”
Lu Jianjia froze for a moment, then understood. Indeed, how could a fox mother who had gained spiritual intelligence ever feel at ease leaving her little fox to wander the world alone?
Looking at the little fox’s two tails, Lu Jianjia said:
“Are you really not going to consider forming a contract with the little fox? It has two tails and is a natural spiritual creature. If you establish a contract, once its rank increases or its cultivation advances, you’ll gain immense benefits as well.
